Concealed by the shadows of night, Zachary, a shiftless, hardhearted sorcerer creeps among the circle of massive standing stones in the ancient temple of the Great Ones. He seeks the enchanted Stone of Argus. Although long since reduced to powder, the very dust of the Stone of Argus would give Zachary tremendous power. He is caught filling his pouch with the magical dust by Rufin, a noble and benevolent wizard.
A battle between the two powerful wizards comes to an end when Zachary, the thief, and the pouch of magical dust fall into a deep chasm known as the Dreaded Abyss. As he falls, Zachary loses his grip on the pouch. Rufin immediately casts a spell, saving Zachary from the abyss, but changing him into animal form, and sending him and the stolen pouch into the Mortal Realm of the Future.
This drama has been witnessed by a quivering, but curious mouse who has always wished for magical power of his own. He agrees to help locate the pouch before Zachary does and return it to Rufin. With a flash of light, the mouse finds himself in the Mortal Realm of the Future, transformed into a magical pocket belonging to an enthusiastic eleven-year old boy named Sam. In search of the pouch, they travel through the Florida wilderness accompanied by Sam's saucy cousin, Cynthia, and his loyal dog, Max. Sam uses his wits and his magic pocket to overcome the dangers and obstacles they encounter, as many other creatures, seeking power, are drawn to the dust of the Stone of the Argus.
