These are novels for young readers (ages 8 - 12). Sam, an enthusiastic eleven year old, discovers that he has a magic pocket while on vacation in Florida with his sassy cousin, Cynthia, and his dog, Max. This leads them into adventures with wizards, a dragon, crab armies, and an old hag with a magical cauldron.
They sail the seas with Captain Duck, climb into deep caverns, and fight their way through the crowded streets of a gnome village. While looking for ghosts in a sandcastle belonging to a kingdom of mice they enter the twilight land of a dark swamp. Sam is nearly eaten by a cat, they ride on the backs of Cynthia's plastic horses that were brought to life, and they travel through a rain forest where everything is alive.
Sam, Cynthia and Max are shrunk to the size of mice, travel through time, and even spout wings to help them in their adventures. Whenever they get into trouble, Sam's magic pocket saves the day. When that doesn't work, Sam and Cynthia are forced to use their wits.
