Far out at sea, a giant wave nearly capsizes the Jolly Ox, a full-masted sailing ship. Nearby, in a musty cavern on the Island of Gog, the evil Hag of Meredith cackles as she stirs another ripple into her cauldron, enjoying the effect it has on a tiny ship floating in her brew. With a flourish, she drips burning wax into her pot. At the same moment, the Jolly Ox is bombarded by treacherous balls of lightning. As the hag plops in a worm, a sea monster suddenly appears before the Jolly Ox. There is a fierce battle between this monster and the Captain of the ship. For a time, it appears that the magical powers of the Captain will overcome the brute strength of the sea monster. But, in the end, the ship is destroyed.

Rufin, a mighty wizard, sends his young apprentice, Sam, back in time to find out what caused the Jolly Ox to sink, and prevent it from happening. With the aid of his magic pocket, Sam defeats the sea monster. But the next morning, Sam discovers that the ship has slipped back in time. The Hag of Meredith has cast a spell that forces them to relive the 10th of August over and over again, until she can finally win the battle and sink the ship.

Sam travels to the Island of Gog. He uses his magic pocket to escape from an angry dragon, search the endless underground passageways within the cavern of Meredith, and ultimately defeat the hag in her brewing chamber.
