Sam has an accident and is called into the world of the dead. While there, he accepts a call to rescue his uncle Todd who disappeared ten years earlier. As soon as Sam recovers, he enters a secret passageway in the Temple of the Standing Stones in pursuit of Todd. Cynthia, his witty cousin, insists on coming along. Sam's dog, Max, and Prince Bolete (he's a small creature who closely resembles a mushroom) also join the party as they all creep down crumbling stone stairs into utter darkness.
Of course, Sam has his trusty magic pocket with him. But, they soon find that there is no magic in this new realm—or is there? They walk on the ceiling, visit the Hag of Meredith as invisible guests, use a chrome-plated time travel machine, and are pursued by a fifteen foot tall, two-headed fire troll. As they penetrate deeper into this realm, they enter a city which is built into the side of an endless cliff—the dreaded Bottomless Abyss.
In the end, Sam and the others conclude that they are forever trapped unless they can solve the mysteries of this realm and discover the magic of "The Wishing Star."
